iBoP Asia, in partnership with United Laboratories, Inc. and Fundacion CODESPA, organized a discussion on essential pro-poor business approaches and the constraints facing organizations and ventures engaged in low-income markets. Leading the activity is Mr. William J. Kramer, principal author of Next 4 Billion and president of the Global Challenge Network.
The activity was held last July 7, 2009 at the Bayanihan Conference Center of Unilab in Pasig City, Metro Manila.
This roundtable discussion convened a group of around 70 key actors and stakeholders representing public, private and civil society organizations involved in “base of the pyramid” or BoP initiatives. Strategies for overcoming these barriers were discussed and successful models both locally and globally were highlighted.
Mr. Kramer is the founder of the Global Challenge Network. He previously served as a Senior Fellow and Deputy Director of the World Resources Institute’s Development through Enterprise Program. He is the principal author of the Next 4 Billion: Market Size and Business Strategy, the first data-based study of business engagement with the poor, published in 2007 by WRI and the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
